DO YOU HAVE A COMRADE?
Gren's a heavily sentimental musician once swept into a war and an unjust imprisonment. He's marred by betrayal and remains deeply distrusting despite his desire for connection. Regardless of how forced, a smile is often present on his face as friendliness is a quality he's intent to upkeep.

With a good ear for music, and an even better one for listening, he's a walking depository for people to vent their problems as it's a merciful distraction from his own.

first impressions
Visual
Gren is tall and lean with his most distinct feature being the long, dark hair that reaches just beyond his waist. His lips are typically set in varying degrees of a smile with his blue eyes revealing the candor of his mood. He maintains a tidy appearance, preferring a wardrobe of dressier pieces like button-up shirts, slacks, and blazers. When weather permits, a scarf and a long tailored coat completes the look.
Gren has gynecomastia as a result of a hormonal imbalance spawned from the abuse of an experimental drug. With the use of a binder his condition is undetectable. | NSFW: I, II, III
Aural
Scent
- pink pepper, warm rum, smoked tobacco, vanilla, and heady cocktails.
Replica's Jazz Club - "Inspired by the scents wafting throughout a Brooklyn jazz club, this cologne brims with the sweet notes of opened cigar boxes, old leather bar stools, and fine aged liquor."
SKILLS
Headcanons are italicized.
Music
β€’ Gren's a musician first and foremost, specializing in the jazz genre. His preferred instrument is the tenor saxophone which he plays at Rester House. He can also play the piano as indicated by the piano shown littered with sheet music in his apartment. Though less inclined to reveal it, he also possesses a proficient singing ability.
Military
β€’As a war veteran he has been trained in survival, weaponry, and hand-to-hand combat.
Drug trade
β€’Gren arranged a substantial drug deal with a crime syndicate. In order to have orchestrated such a transaction he would have required the prowess and influence gained from peddling drugs with some regularity.
Bartending
β€’When not playing music, Gren often tends the bar at Rester House. Given the rough population of Blue Crow, he is usually the easiest thing on the patrons' eyes. He's tipped generously for his impeccable service.

Gren is friendly and personable, exuding a vague familiarity that he easily wields during interactions. This is demonstrated when he first meets Faye, the sole female bar patron in a city populated only by men. He makes his opening after she sneezes, confidently chiming in with, "Take care." He explains that, according to locals, those two words will thwart her transformation into a fairy. It's endearing, but difficult to believe considering the cold, dejected state of the city and the array of criminals that make up its population. It wouldn't be far-fetched to think that Gren made it up, lending charm and warmth to the surroundings in the way that the blazer he drapes across Faye's shoulders lends warmth to her. She initially balks at his attempts to charm, but moments later Faye is on Gren's couch willfully divulging all of her burdens to a stranger. "I don't know why I'm telling you all of this. I feel like I'm in a confession booth. You're not a preacher by any chance, are you?" He isn't, but it's obvious that he at least possesses the patience of a saint.

He listens, granting unbudging attention in a way that welcomes oversharing. He doesn't mind it, though. Being the sensitive type, he's well-equipped for the task and he's careful when handling the feelings of others. He'll offer his insight paired with a soft and understanding smile. Smiles are a frequent occurrence for him, manifesting in instances of flirtation to somber moments in which he recounts his trauma. They're a mark of his charisma, a multifaceted instrument intending to disarm, persuade, or distract. Although, he's mostly inclined to utilize his charm to attract what he craves the most: connection.

Camaraderie is invaluable to Gren. He craves companionship, romanticizing it to the point of neediness. It's a subject that makes him especially emotional, he admits this after Faye expresses her desire for solitude. "You said that you didn't need comrades, but I'm attracted to the word... to the point of tears." Photographs paper the walls of his apartment in homage of past relationships. They reveal a distant, happier Gren. A Gren smiling among friends, a young Gren on the lap of a doting mother, and a Gren beside a trusted comrade in a war torn desert. They're all displays of warmth and connection, a staggering contrast to his most recent reality as a profoundly damaged and lonely man. While it's evident that he's adept in socializing on a superficial level, he lacks the essential component that fortifies authentic bonds: trust. In the three years that he remains in Blue Crow he only shares his story with two people. Most of his time is spent emotionally secluded with a wedge of distrust between him and everyone else.

Instead he settles for the company of his obsession, stubbornly cycling through a pattern of accepting and denying Vicious' betrayal. His struggle to let go is seen in a torn photo of them that's been mended with tape and displayed on his wall. Acceptance is what drove him to tear it apart, but denial is what brought it back together. Gren's wavering is a perpetuation of the fractured mental state that followed him from prison. "I heard it was Vicious that testified against me. I started to go crazy." His obsession is what sets him on a destructive path that leads him back to Vicious, and ultimately, his death. Even after Julia shared adequate evidence of Vicious' wrongdoings, Gren remained adamant, desperate to hear the truth directly from the man that he had admired: "I looked up to you. I believed in you."

The war, the betrayal, and the drug addled imprisonment rendered devastating results that were mentally and physically transformative for Gren. Beneath the kindness, charm, and sensitivity there's an unstable and obsessive nature constantly grappling with issues surrounding insecurity and trust. In the end he succumbs to his struggles, and as his star falls, an elder narrates its descent: "That star is the tear of a warrior. A lost soul who has finished his battle somewhere on this planet. A pitiful soul that could not find his way to the lofty realm where The Great Spirit awaits us all."
